The goal of this master’s thesis is to examine identity development, the role of family environment and attachment to parents during the developmental process, to summarize the main conclusions based on latest research and to explore possible associations between the characteristics of family environment and attachment to parents and identity status of 17-19 years old adolescents.
114 pupils of 11th and 12th form of Latvia secondary schools (46 boys and 68 girls), in age of 17 – 19 years, took part in this research. The following methods were used in this paper work: Extended Version of the Objective Measure of Ego Identity Status (EOMEIS-2), The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), Family Environment Scale (FES).
The results show, that there are no gender differences in 17 –19 years old adolescents identity status ratings and qualities of attachment to parents. It is possible to conclude, that the development of identity of 17 –19 year old adolescents’ is positively influenced by secure attachment to parents, trust and positive communication with parents, and also family cohesion and expressiveness. The development of identity of 17 –19 year old adolescence is negatively influenced by alienation in relationships with parents. There is a positive association between the achievement of identity in ideological and interpersonal domain and such family environment factors as family achievement orientation, intellectual-cultural orientation, and moral-religious emphasis.
