Respondenti aizpildīja Bar-Ona Emocionālā Intelekta aptauju (EQ-i) (The Emotional Quotient Inventory, Bar-On, 1997, 1999) un Beka Depresijas aptauju (Beck depression inventory – BDI ( Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996).
The research objective was to find out whether there is a correlation between emotional intelligence and a depression level of adult individuals aged 18-30 and 50-60. It was expected that high emotional intelligence respectively will define lower depression level in the both age groups. The research question was stated as well whether emotional intelligence and depression level would differ significantly in the both age groups.
Participants were selected by sex (50 men and 50 women in both groups) and age (18 – 30-year old people group M=24.4 years, 50 – 60-year old group M=56.7 years), as well as education level (in the younger group 80 % were with higher education/university students, 20 % with secondary/vocational education, in the older group respectively – 72 % and 28 %).
Respondents filled in the Emotional Quotient Inventory, Bar-On, 1997, 1999, and Beck depression inventory – BDI ( Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996). Questionnaire forms were collected individually, through Internet as well. Respondents were informed about anonymity of the gathered data.
After summarization of results it was stated that statistically significant correlations exist between emotional intelligence and deppression figures in the both groups. In the both groups correlation is opposite, negative; respectively in the younger group (r= - 0,62; p<0.01), and in the older age group (r= - 0,43; p<0,01).
There are no significant differences between emotional intelligence figures for both age groups (t= - 1,14; p>0,05), except for Reality control scale (t= - 3,59; p<0,01). Statistically significant depression level differences exist in different age groups (t= - 3,60; p<0,01), where in the 50 – 60-old group the depression level is considerably higher.
The research results could have been influenced also by specific features of each group, as well as culture environment factors.
Key words: emotional intelligence, depression, age group.
