The theme of the Diploma Paper was Students’ Self – Correction Strategies in Writing in English in Secondary School. The aim of the Diploma Paper was to discover why students are reluctant to make self-correction and what to undertake in order to make students’ self-correction effective. During own studying and teaching practice the author has observed that students did not like doing self-correction or did it reluctantly and very often gained no benefit from it because they did not have particular knowledge for doing it properly, so that their self-correction would help them to prevent mistakes in future.
In order to conduct the research, the author used a case study as a method of research. As a data collection method the author of the Paper used a questionnaire. The research was conducted in Riga W. Ostvald Secondary School. 8 Teachers who teach English in secondary school and 26 students were asked to answer the questions from the questionnaires. Additionally, 26 students from grade 10 and 11 were participating in the case study.
The research revealed that teachers have a positive attitude towards students’ self-correction and they ask students to do it after their written works. However, majority of students still hesitate to work individually and choose to make analysis with their teachers. Eventually, if a variety of self-correction techniques is introduced, students will be more willing to work individually or in groups not depending on the teacher, thus in such a way developing their accuracy in language.
