The goal of the research was to find out, what kind of correlation between emotional intelligence and alexithymia the patients with vegetative-vascular dystonia have. Within this research it was found: whether indicators of emotional intelligence predict alexithymia manifestation regarding patients with vegetative-vascular dystonia; whether there are statistically significant distinctions in indicators of emotional intelligence and alexithymia levels regarding patients with vegetative-vascular dystonia and the control group. 78 students aged from 17 – 20 years, who are currently attending schools and universities, took part in the research. By the anonymous questionnaire, respondents were divided into 2 groups: the group of “patients with vegetative-vascular dystonia” (the experimental group) and “the control group” with the amount of 39 people in each group. The average age of people in the experimental group was 18-23 years, in the control group – 18-53 years. All demographic indicators were equated to each other in both groups. Throughout the research 3 tools were used: Iezīmju emocionālā intelekta aptauja – īsā versija (Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire, TEIQue – Short Form, Petrides & Furnham, 2006), Toronto aleksitīmijas skala (Twenty – Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS – 20)), (Bagby, Parker, & Taylor, 1994) and the questionnaire for the selection of the respondents. The results of the research showed that the indicators of emotional intelligence predict alexithymia manifestation regarding patients with vegetative-vascular dystonia in 36% of cases. The results of the distinctions in the groups showed that emotional intelligence, emotionality, sociability – is higher in the control group and the general indicator of alexithymia and externality – in the experimental group.
Key words: emotional intelligence, alexithymia, vegetative-vascular dystonia
