Successful mastering of vocabulary is the key to knowing a language. Any language serves as a means of transferring information. Words bear meaning, and therefore are absolutely necessary for the learners to express their thoughts and feelings. The more developed vocabulary learner has, the more elaborate ideas he can express using words with subtle shades of meaning. Vocabulary is an ultimately necessary basis upon which the learners build their future development of the language. The title of the paper is Visuals as a means to Develop Pupils vocabulary in English Lessons in Primary classes. The hypothesis of the Paper is that using visuals during the lesson will increase learners’ word-stock and develop learners’ learning strategies. Teaching vocabulary in primary school needs special approach. The teacher should take into consideration age peculiarities of the primary school learners’ group. The author of the Paper believes that visuals as a means of presenting and revising vocabulary suit best the learners of the primary school. Visuals are bright and interesting, and therefore they are easy to remember. Visuals help in creating positive and motivating atmosphere in the classroom, thus facilitating learners’ participation in the course of the lesson.
To gather the necessary information for supporting the hypothesis of the Diploma Paper, the author of the Paper used various methods, such as interviews, observations, and questionnaires.
The author of the Paper conducted interviews with English language teachers, to which main task was to find out whether a teacher uses visuals in teaching vocabulary, how successful it is, and if not, understand the causes of it. The researcher gave out questionnaires for the learners and having analyzed them, tried to understand what aspects of the teaching could be improved and what can be changed. The author of the paper conducted observation sessions during the lessons to understand how successfully the teachers use visuals in their work and analyze possible problems and methods of their prevention.
The results of the practical part showed that students were unprepared for such lessons. But, still, the prognosis is more positive than negative and the fact is that, on the whole, using of visuals was successful during the teaching practice and students began to realize that sometimes language can be a puzzle they are able to solve more or less independently
