Ņemot vērā visu iepriekšminēto, Diplomdarba autors secina, ka lomu spēles izmantošana vidusskolas angļu valodas stundās var veicināt toleranci pret cilvēkiem no dažādām kultūrām. As English has become an international language, teaching for linguistic competence cannot be separated from teaching for intercultural awareness. Furthermore, in nowadays society people have different cultural backgrounds and behaviour patterns, therefore, in communication with people from other cultures it is not enough to have a good grammar knowledge, excellent pronunciation or rich vocabulary because successful communication partly depends upon understanding the culture of people one is communicating with. That is why the author of the Paper stresses the increasingly important role of intercultural communication in ELT and the necessity to raise students' intercultural awareness. This led to the aim of this Paper that was to introduce a role play as one of the ways how to raise students' intercultural awareness in Secondary school.
In order to achieve the aim, a case study was carried out in Jūrmala Secondary School from January until March 2008. The participants of the research were 40 students of form 11 and 10 English teachers.
Data collection methods used by the author of the Paper are: questionnaires for teachers and students to find out their attitude and opinion about using role play in English lessons and how important is the role of culture when learning a foreign language; observation in order to examine the effectiveness of role plays in raising students' tolerance towards people from other cultures; students' feedback analysis to find out how students' felt during the practised role plays; post-questionnaires for students to find out what they gained from role plays.
The analysis of obtained data reveals that students consider culture a significant component of the language because by knowing it the process of learning becomes more interesting, language has meaningful content and knowing culture helps to form better relationship with people from other cultures. The data proved that as a result of practised role plays, students learned new facts about lifestyle, values and behaviour patterns in different cultures. Students also admitted that the gained experience would help them to promote communication with representatives from other countries in the future and avoid misunderstandings.
The findings also show that teachers are aware of the advantages that students may get from role plays containing cultural aspects. All things considered, the author of the Paper can conclude that using role play in Secondary school English language classes can promote tolerance towards people with different cultural backgrounds.
