Culture has manifestations of many forms; burial customs and cemetery traditions are also an exceptional testimony of heritage value. The goal of the research is to demonstrate that the Cult of the Dead has been and is still present in Latvia as an important element of culture, and it should be a part of Culturology course in Secondary School.
The author has outlined the insight into worldwide displays of the Cult of the Dead to make a comparison with Latvian culture; the author enlarges upon mythological perception of Death, the importance of “veļu laiks” (the time of the ghosts); discloses funerals as one of the main rites of passage, also analyzes both ancient and modern burial customs.
To prove the existence of the Cult of the Dead, the author was tasked to acquaint herself with different theories of different periods; to analyze the display of this topic in folklore and fiction; to visit ancient and modern burial sites; to compile the visual material (photos, videos)
