The Diploma Paper addresses the issue of students’ responsibility in teaching-learning process in English lessons in vocational school. The author of the Paper has been teaching English at Ogre Technical School for 5 years. The learning environment of vocational school has several particularities. Vocational school curriculum provides twice as less English Foreign Language classroom lessons as for the students of secondary schools. Many of the students have started to live an independent life being away from their parents and living at the dormitory which decreases their interest in and responsibility for learning. During the research the possible solutions to increase students’ responsibility for learning English were sought in Cooperative Learning approaches, activities and strategies.
A case study was carried out at Ogre Technical School based on research sample of 12 first year students of 1AD group (Form 10). Methods of data collection used in the research were observation and questionnaires. During research various approaches and strategies of Cooperative Learning were examined. The chosen Cooperative Learning activities and strategies were implemented in English lessons in order to structure and develop students’ responsibility in learning. The data of the initial and the final state of responsibility were gathered about five constituents of responsibility: being prepared for the lesson, having done home assignment, staying on task during the lesson, asking peers for help, sharing ideas and materials. The analyses of the observation data showed that individual students had become more responsible according to various constituents of responsibility after having practiced Cooperative Learning activities and structures.
