Atslēgas vārdi: vēlme, vēlme pēc labā, vēlmes objekts, Sokrats, sokratiskā filosofija One of the main features of Socratic philosophy is the view that everyone desires the good. However, this claim is ambiguous and it is unclear what precisely did Socrates want to convey by it. In this paper I aim to clarify the meaning of this claim, focusing on "Meno" 77b - 78c and "Gorgias" 466 – 468e. In the first passage the claim is established, although the argument seems to prove only that everyone desires what they consider to be good, and not what is good. In the second passage Socrates uses the same claim to prove that orators and tyrants do what they find best, instead of what they desire. I address the problems these two passages raise and provide what I take to be a genuinely Socratic account of this claim.
