Copyright and the issues associated with it have increased in importance lately – the problem of piracy, which is closely related to issues concerning freedom of information, has caused a significant amount of discussion in the general society. The aim of the work is to analyze the said problem from both the jurisdical and ethical aspects, describing specifically the phenomenon of internet piracy and what causes it. It’s focused with finding an ethical theory, which would be able to describe the inner workings of the internet better than what we’re using currently, and also would be able to provide an ethical sloution for the important copyright issues, specifically concentrating on the related problems in Latvia. The postulated hypothesis of the work, upon which it is concentrated is: Could it be possible that the best, most describing and utilizable ethical theory, as far as interntet and it’s users are concerned, is M. Scanlon’s Contractualism – and can we can deduct valid, plausible, practical solutions for the ethical issues of the intentet, by using this doctrine?
