The central aim of this master’s thesis is to describe the role of manipulative technologies in making public opinion within the mass media. In this thesis there will be laid out the main philosophy of M.McLuhan, J.Baudrillard and N.Chomsky on the meaning of mass media and manipulative technologies, instruments, strategies etc., or, as the author of this thesis offers, to label them with a merging term ‘manipulacra’, which is based on the shared features of these manipulative phenomenon.
A common approach can be found in all of these philosophers though regarding manipulacra, which describes the special role of manipulacra, as a social phenomenon, in making public opinion within mass media according to certain interests of political, economic and social groups, or the “seduction” practiced by the media. Manipulacra is an instrument for conscious and intentional misrepresentation of reality, for making an illusion, using such invisible “interpretative machinery” as manipulation.
