Subjects: For the study were chosen 11 The University of Latvia students with mean age 22.1 ± 1.8 years. All of them have non correction visual acuity close to 1 by Snellen chart.
Method: The test programme was written in the Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. It is possible to study the peripheral contrast vision with this computer programme. The stimuli were Gabor sin grating fields with variable contrasts. The programme is based on the forced choice method. Participant’s eye movements were recorded during the experiment.
Results and analysis: The obtained results for the low and medium (1 and 3 cycles/degree) spatial frequencies did not significantly differ from the described in the source data. When testing with higher (6 cycles/degree) spatial frequency there is a rapid decrease in the contrast sensitivity in the temporal part of retina however, it was impossible to judge about the contrast vision in the nasal part of retina with the chosen contrast levels. The present contrast vision drop confirms the theory that peripheral contrast sensitivity depends on the receptive field size. During the experiment reflexive physiological saccades towards the stimuli were detected, which can affect the studies results.
Conclusion: From the significant difference between the results of temporal and nasal parts of the retina at the higher (6 cycle/degree) spatial frequency we can suggest that there is irregular receptive fields’ distribution throughout the 10° periphery. Qualitative eye-movement analysis showed that the eye do uncontrolled saccades, which may influence the artificial contrast vision sensitivities’ “improvement”.
