Discursive and communicative techniques employed in political speeches allow for textual and contextual manipulations; therefore in recent years there has been a growing necessity for the analysis and evaluation of political addresses. The present bachelor thesis is aimed at investigating the use and the role of hedging devices in political addresses, employed to pursue specific political goals. The theoretical methods comprised a summative analysis of essential theories about the use of hedging in oral and written discourse. The empirical research method employed was the discourse analysis, which involved the analysis of fifteen political speeches delivered during the period of American Anti-Communism. Hedges were analysed in terms of general classification of hedging devices, principal motivations for their use and overall effect produced by hedged constructions. The results showed that they can be viewed as modal markers embedded in political speeches to alter the modality of the statements and disguise the underlying conflict of attitudes rendered by the political message. It was found that the most frequent motivating factors for the use of hedging are politeness and face-saving. It has been concluded that hedging is an effective communicative strategy implemented in political speeches to either attenuate the force of the statements and minimize face-threats or enhance the force of the claims and reinforce personal accountability for the message.
Key words: hedging, political speeches, modality, face, manipulation, discourse analysis.
