This paper investigates the present tense usage and grammar. An analysis of the descriptions of the usage of tenses in English reference grammars shows that although tense is a grammatical category that encodes time meaning the two phenomena do not correlate directly. Much of the meaning of tenses is a matter of convention, i.e. how speakers have chosen to communicate meaning more expressively and perhaps efficiently. To understand how the present tense is used, thirty BBC news articles were analyzed. The statistics and tables in the empirical part show that the present tense is widespread in the news articles. The present tense in indirect speech mostly has the past time meaning. However, the past tense is frequently used in indirect speech. It was concluded that indirect speech usage depends on the journalist, who is reporting the news. It has also been observed that the reporting verb to say is most commonly used verb in BBC news.
Key-words: the present tense, the sequence of tenses, article, the verb, tense forms, the past meaning, the future meaning.
