There is a wide supply of different handheld GPS systems available in the global markets. There are visual, technical and functional differences between them. The information given by the producers and distributors about both horizontal and vertical precision of handheld GPS systems is often misleading.
The aim of the bachelor’s project is to ascertain the precision of different low priced handheld GPS systems.
The bachelor’s project is divided in two parts. The first one is a research in Riga on my own account and the second one is a summary of data from measurements about precision of handheld GPS systems provided by the University of Latvia, the faculty of Geography and Earth Sciences, measured in field research in geodesy. In the first part of the project in my own research I ascertained the precision of six different handheld GPS systems Magellan eXplorist 210, Magellan SporTrak, Magellan Triton 400, Magellan Meridian Marien, Garmin GPS 76 and the mobile device Nokia 5800. In the second part of the project I ascertained the precision of two handheld GPS systems Magellan eXplorist 210 and Magellan SporTrak.
