Linguistic interference is a common problem in simultaneous interpreting that affects the phonological, syntactical, morphological, lexical, and phraseological level of the interpretation. The typical consequences of linguistic interference are long and complicated target language sentence structures, mispronounced words, and wrong word choice that make the translation sound strange, comical, or sometimes lead to incomprehension. The aim of this research was to explain how linguistic interference is interpreted in translation and interpreting theory; what are the main causes for interference; how interference manifests itself on each of the levels of language, and to what extent language interference affects the notion of quality interpretation. The research results show that the main causes for interference in simulataneous interpreting are excessive cognitive load during the task as well as interpreter's lack of experience. Stress and fatigue are other factors to be taken into consideration. An important conclusion is that the level of linguistic interference in simultaneous interpreting can be reduced only to a certain extent, and under certain circumstances interference mistakes can be committed also by professional interpreters.
