Purpose: To evaluate how different types of monochromatic aberrations affect stereopsis.
Subjects: 10 people, 20 to 29 years old, with good stereovision and good visual acquity at near distance.
Methods: Subjects had to view random dot stereograms, where one half-image was aberration-free; other half-image was generated with aberration (defocuss, astigmatism, coma, trefoil or spherical aberration) with certain RMS value ranging from 0 to 0,4 μm. For each presented stereo-pair subject had to register whether stereoeffect was perceived. Experiment was conducted according to constant stimuli psychophysical method.
Results: Mean RMS threshold value, above which stereopsis is interrupted, for defocuss is found to be 0,22 ± 0,02 μm, astigmatism 0,25 ± 0,01 μm, trefoil 0,28 ± 0,02, coma 0,27 ± 0,02 μm, spherical aberration 0,21 ± 0,01 μm.
Conclusions: RMS threshold value varies among different types of aberrations. Spherical aberration has the lowest threshold value, thus spherical aberration is found to affect stereopsis the most.
