The present research deals with the concepts of space and time, investigating the linguistic representations of the conceptual structures of space and time revealing the fundamental systems in terms of which they are expressed in language. The goal of the present research is to discover the organizational structures of these two concepts, focusing on the exploration of similarities and differences between the two domains, which is achieved by the analyzing and comparison of the identical English spatial and temporal prepositions in and at and their Russian counterparts. The research draws the conclusion that there are both similarities and discrepancies of the semantic properties of identical space and time prepositions in and at, which give evidence about at least partial space-based metaphorical structure of the concept of time.
Key-words: temporal and spatial relations, figure and ground, semantics of space and time prepositions.
