Vēsturiskie un literārie stāstījumi Greiema Svifta romānā „Ūdenszeme”

Abstract

Šajā zinātniskajā darbā ir aplūkots un analizēts vēstures un vēsturisko un literāro vēstījumu jautājums Greiema Svifta romānos. Teorētiskā daļa ir balstīta uz svarīgākajiem postmodernistu filosofiskiem uzskatiem, klasisko un postklasisko narataloģiju, historiogrāfiskiem pētījumiem un literāro kriticismu. Šī darba praktiskā puse analizē vēstures konkurējošos naratīvus, kas aprakstīti romānā „Ūdenszeme”, atklājot Svifta nostāju pret tiem. Pētījums pierāda, ka Svifts noliedz vēstures Lielo Naratīvu atbilstoši Liotāra uzskatiem. Vienlaikus Svifts neapstiprina radikālāku viedokli, saskaņā ar kuru patiesība par pagātni ir pilnībā nesasniedzama. Svifts piedāvā metaforu par ‘zemes reklamāciju’, kas apzīmē nebeidzamu pagātnes atgūšanas procesu no aizmirstības un sagrozīšanas.

The present research deals with the question of history and historical and literary narratives in Graham Swift’s novels. Its theoretical part relies on some key postmodernist philosophical views, classical and post-classical narratology, historiographic studies, and literary criticism. The practical purpose of the present thesis is to analyse the competing narratives of history described in the novel Waterland and to reveal Swift’s opinion towards them. The research proves that Swift rejects the Grand Narrative of history in Lyotard’s sense. At the same time Swift does not endorse the more radical view according to which the truth about the past is completely unattainable. Swift suggests the metaphor ‘land reclamation’ which stands for the never-ending process of reclaiming the past from oblivion and distortion.
