Identitātes problēmas Maikla Ondatjē darbos

Abstract

Mūsdienu Rietumu sabiedrībai ir jāsaskaras ar multi etnisko, multi kultūras un multi reliģisko realitāti. Internacionālisms un ‘hibridizācija’ ne vienmēr noved līdz tradicionālo nacionālo vērtību un kultūras atšķirību izzušanu. Šī darba mērķis ir analizēt indivīdu identitāti mūsdienu kosmopolitiskā pasaulē. Savos romānos “Angļu pacients”, “Anilas rēgs” un “Satiekoties ar ģimeni” Maikls Ondatje ir aizskāris ļoti jūtīgu šīs jaunizveidotās sabiedrības daļu, kas arī ir mana darba galvenā tēma. Atspoguļojot savu pieredzi Maikls Ondatje apskata dažādus veidus, kuros mēs veidojam savu personisko identitāti - kā vārdu, rasi, kultūru , valodu, reliģiju, sociālo izcelsmi un ideoloģiju. Mēs pārmantojam identitāti, piedzimstot noteiktā ģimentē, rasē, nacionalitātē, kultūrā un noteiktā sociālā slānī. Mēs iegūstam identitāti ar vārdu, izglītību, profesiju, laulību, politiskiem un sociāliem uzsaktiem, un ar savām izvēlēm, kā arī ar izvēlēto ģeogrāfisko dzīvesvietu. Mūsu iegūtā identitāte, tāpat kā mantotā identitāte nav nemainīga, bet gan mainās kopā ar mums, ar laiku, ar apkārtējiem notikumiem un ar mūsu personīgo attīstību.

The modern Western society has to deal with its contemporary multi ethnicity, multi cultural and multi religious reality. Internationalism and even “hybridisation” however do not necessarily lead to the disappearance of traditional national values and cultural differences. The purpose of this work is to analyse the evolution of identity of individuals in the modern cosmopolitan world. Michael Ondaatje has managed to touch a very sensitive part of that newly formed society in his novels “The English Patient”, “Anil’s Ghost” and “Running in the Family”, which are the main subject of my study. Reflecting on his own upbringing Michael Ondaatje examines the complex ways in which we construct our personal identity in terms of name, race, culture, language, religion, social origin and ideology. We inherit identity because we are born to a particular family, race, nationality, culture and social background. We acquire identity through name, education, profession, marriage, political and social views and preferences and through chosen geographical location of residence. Our acquired identity, as well as our inherited one is not fixed but changes with us, with time, with events around us, with our personal evolutions.
