The present study is devoted to the issue of the acquisition of English morphology in children who are exposed to two and more languages. The current investigation is aimed at the analysis of the use of inflectional morphemes in spontaneous communication in the primary school bilingual and trilingual children.
The methods of the research comprise the literature review and the case study on the basis of the questionnaire, the interview and the learner corpus texts.
The analysis of the questionnaire identifies the major problematic areas in the acquisition of English morphology. The analysis of the interview finds out the learner’s English language proficiency level and provides data necessary for designing a task used for the learner’s speech data collection. The conducted learner corpus analysis studies frequently, rarely, misused and omitted free and bound morphemes in the bilingual and trilingual groups of children. The results of the developmental sequence in the inflectional morpheme acquisition prove the existence of the natural order of English grammatical morpheme acquisition as well as the priority of the cognitive processes and the innate ability that are positioned at the heart of acquisition of rules, principles and patterns of grammar.
