The topic of the bachelor paper is „Cross-cultural differences in translation”. Cross-cultural aspect rendition into functional target texts is the main difficulty for the translators that establish the role of communicators across cultures. The purpose of the bachelor paper is to examine the translations of recipes in cookery books and names of dishes on restaurant menus though careful cross-cultural aspect analysis. The cultural element is extremely important in the case of culinary language translation. International cuisine specific terms are investigated and problematic issues are discussed. The lack of an equivalent terminology in the target language is the main difficulty translators encounter. A direct word for word translation fails to reach the target recipient and therefore preference is given to other strategies. Methods and different theoretical approaches to translation of culture bound texts are listed and examined. The results concluded in the research process reveal several obstacles regarding specific culinary terms that are mostly borrowings from various cultures.
