The present Master Paper deals with the issue of the validity of role-play tasks in speaking proficiency assessment. The first chapter gives an outline of the aspects of communicative competence and development of spoken communication skills. The second chapter provides testing techniques of spoken language, discusses the levels of spoken proficiency, as well as enumerates criteria and norms of spoken language proficiency tests. The third chapter examines the concept, structure and stages of role-play as a communicative task, and presents a way of integrating role-play into English language curriculum for assessment purposes. In the practical part, the author of the paper focuses on the results of the case study undertaken for the purpose of implementing the theoretical considerations on the validity of role-play tasks in speaking proficiency assessment in practice and on the results of the analyses of the interview with the English language teacher and learners’ questionnaires.
