The present paper is devoted to the analysis of psychological effects of graphical design in literary texts. The role of graphical devices of literary works has been quite underestimated. Therefore, the paper aims to demonstrate the connection between a positive psychological response of the reader and a graphically enhanced text, as well as to identify the different effects graphical devices can have on the reader. The author has analyzed the available theory on visual perception, compared the graphical devices of three novels by Dan Brown, and carried out a research, determining readers’ responses to text formatting. The results show that the layout features may attract the reader, ensure legibility and comprehension of the text. Moreover, graphical details, such as italic, bold, capitalization and different typefaces, may serve to guide the reader, by indicating clues, significant terms and names. Finally, the research proves that graphical devices have an influence on the reader’s perception and opinion, thus also affecting the success of a literary work.
