Vengeance is an integral part of nearly any ancient tragedy often featuring as the main motif. Every author of ancient tragedies has made use of it in the makings of his tragic story; however the works of Euripides excel among others with literary characteristics raising them to another level, especially with regards to the incorporated acts of vengeance.
The aim of this study is to examine the types and roles of vengeance in Euripides’ tragedies as well as evaluate the significance of this motif in the forming of the tragic in a given work of tragedy. In pursuit of this aim the role of myths and characters in relation to vengeance will be portrayed and explained and types, causes and effects of vengeance as well as its function will be determined.
As a result the following hypothesis will be assessed - the motif of vengeance in Euripides’ tragedies is particularly outspoken and performs an integral function of forming the tragic.
