MA paper “The Elements of Orality in The Silmarillion by J.R.R.Tolkien” aims at researching the features of orality in a novel seldom discussed by scholars.
The theoretical part of the paper investigates phonetic, semantic and syntactic features as well as the psychodynamics of oral composition. In addition, Axel Olrik’s theory of the epic laws for oral narratives is reviewed.
The practical part of the paper examines the presence (or absence) of the surface structure typical for oral discourse in the novel. It also deals with the psychodynamics of The Silmarillion and studies its compliance with the epic laws.
The results of the research reveal extensive use of oral elements in The Silmarillion at various linguistic and narrative levels of the work. In various parts of the novel, the epic laws are differently applied.
