Her poetry is still being researched, interpreted and evaluated by many scholars. They mostly pay attention to her social, political and religious cultures, but rarely any of them looks deeper in Wheatley’s neoclassical and Christianity motif use. Therefore, this paper aims to research the usage of Greek mythology and Biblical images by Phillis Wheatley in her poetry. To accomplish the aim of the research, research questions were established in order to identify the use of Greek mythology and Biblical images, as well as to discover the hidden message behind those images.
The work is divided into two parts. In the first part, the author provides a deeper research of the life and poetry of Phillis Wheatley and other scholarly works. The second part features an analysis and prescription of the poems of Phillis Wheatley. To ensure that the research is precise, the author used research methods, such as cultural, textual, narrative, stylistic and close-reading analysis. Each of the methods helped the author to provide an analysis of previous scholarly works as well as an analysis of the poems of Phillis Wheatley. Cultural analysis is based on analysis of previous scholarly works on Phillis Wheatley’s life and poetry. Textual analysis provides an analysis of the content of the poems and their message, while narrative analysis helps examine the content and the significance of the poems. Stylistic analysis and close-reading method are based on a deeper analysis of the poems of Phillis Wheatley. Those two methods examine the lexical and syntactical devices, the structure and meaning of the poems as well as language patterns within the poems.
After an analysis of the poems of Phillis Wheatley, it is concluded that she used Greek mythology and Biblical images for particular purposes. Mostly, these images were used to hide a meaning, for example, proper names and people in general as well as her thoughts on slavery and human equality. Not only did she express her thoughts with the help of these elements, but she was also trying to communicate with elite persons, as King George III. By using those images, she crawled to somebody, showed her belief in God, portrayed war and various events and used them to embellish poetry. However, this research could be further continued in order to examine other mythological images, for example, Roman mythology, and Phillis Wheatley as a person, not as a poet.
