Human skin is one of the major mesenchymal stem cell sources. Stem cells can differentiate in various cell types. It has been shown that skin mesenchymal cells can be differentiated to express neuroectodermal markers. Skin mesenchymal cells are seen as potential candidates for neurodegenerative disease treatment.
The aim of our study was to determine neuroectodermal marker expression in skin mesenchymal cells using immunofluorescence method and to check the effects of laminin and fibronectin on cell proliferation, morphology and differentiation.
Our results suggest that differentiated skin mesenchymal cells express neuroectodermal markers Nestīns, Tubulīns, GFAP, and to a lesser extent, SOX 10 and S100.
Laminin and fibronectin promote cell proliferation and affect differentiation processes
Keywords: mesenchymal stem cells, neeuroectodermal markers, laminin, fibronectin.
