Atslēgvārdi: sociālās zinātnes, studenti, maģistra izglītība, vērtība, zināšanas, diploms The perspective of this diploma work is to find out, how valuable the master’s degree is in the eyes of society. Furthermore, to find out, why students choose to achieve master’s degree and how they and employers rate the importance of particular education. University of Latvia Faculty of Humanities has been set as an example. There are three methods used to collect different opinions: quantitative polling (bachelor’s and master’s degrees students), interviewing experts and having focus-group discussion between students of master’s degree.
As the summarized results show, current master’s degree students point acquiring new knowledge as the main reason that motivates them to study for master’s degree. Bachelor’s degree students point the importance of master’s degree in labour market- it enhances competitiveness and makes successful career more possible. Employers see master’s degree diploma less important than real work experience and knowledge. Experts find bachelor’s degree as obligation in labour market, whereas master’s degree is not seen in such matter.
