In this work, untreated clay obtained from different Latvian clay deposits and expanded clay was investigated. Influence of pH, ionic strength and biomass concentration on the bacterial adhesion was studied. The batch experiments were carried out in order to determine the number of viable counts of bacteria (colony forming units – CFU) in the presence and absence of clay granules in the incubation liquid as well as in the suspension recovered from surface of granules after four hours long incubation at 30 C. It is estimated that adhesion occurs on all of the studied granules and clay, which are received from Liepa, Lode and Prometejs deposits or bought in the shop. The results show that only Lode granules are suitable for immobilization of living cell. Prometejs granules possess bactericidal activity in water medium. This effect is less expressed in Liepa granules but Lode granules don’t show such influence at all. Possible mechanisms of the established bactericidal activity are described. The adhesion results show that clay treatment has influence on the bacterial adhesion. The results of the study suggest that Latvian clay and corresponding expanded clay materials are very different and therefore could be used in different fields of the biotechnology.
