This research is a comparative study of magical realism and the fantastic; its object is to differentiate between these narrative modes, whose main common trait is the coexistence of two conflicting codes – the real and the supernatural – within the same textual universe.
The antinomy between the real and the supernatural is treated differently in each of these modes: in the fantastic the conflict is not resolved and the supernatural remains incompatible with the real, whereas in magical realism the antinomy is resolved and the supernatural is harmonised and integrated into the real.
The resolution of the antinomy determines the perception of the supernatural on the narrative level (i.e. the attitude of the characters and the narrator), which is further studied in the second part of the research by means of a stylistic analysis of examples of fantastic and magical realist texts, focusing on the reactions prompted by supernatural phenomena. The analysis is organised in three parts (“trigger element – first reaction – second reaction”), which allows to segment the reactions leading to the resolution of the antinomy and the eventual distinction between the fantastic and magical realist modes.
