Social media has lately become an important aspect in the process of communication. The emerging popularity of social media has not only changed the everyday habits of people, but also the vocabulary used by them – a number of technical terms and phrases for concepts which are available only on the social media websites are introduced in the English vocabulary. The changes in the English vocabulary due to the influence of social media have been studied to a great extent by Crystal (2011). However, a detailed study of the social media related neologisms has not yet been provided. Therefore, the present research focuses on the investigation of the changes in the English vocabulary due to the emerging popularity of web-based social media.
The purpose of the thesis is to study the use of social media related lexical items in context. The main method applied in the present research is qualitative analysis on how specific social media related words and word meanings are used in collocations.
The research findings show the most frequently used neologisms and their derivatives and compounds related to social media and the collocations in which they are used. The author concludes that social media related neologisms are mostly used together with other words and terms related to Web 2.0, and in the process of creation of the new words in the field of social media the word-formation and grammar rules may be ignored.
Keywords: social media, vocabulary, language change, word-formation, neologisms.
