In this paper the terminology of the insurance-related texts is analyzed. The analysis proves that the major part of Latvian insurance-related terminology consists of the borrowings, as the native terminology is often imprecise and vague. The paper focuses on the examination of the terminology of the insurance-related texts, investigation of the terminology-related issues, definition of the major term-building techniques and the identification of the most effective strategies for translation. In the course of the terminology analysis special attention is paid to the origin of the terms, their equivalents in other languages, term-building patterns, as well as possible rendering options. The paper proves that further in-depth analysis of the insurance terminology should be carried out in order to detect inaccurate translations, discrepancies between the same terms in different languages, as well as deficiencies. It is also pointed out that the terms should be reviewed, unified and approved by the Terminology Commission, as well as the glossary of the insurance terms should be created and should be available for the general public.
