Abstract

This research explores problematic aspects of the manifold character of the interpreter’s role and endeavours to find out whether a more strict definition of the interpreter’s role could be possible. It examines various situations that define more or less active role of an interpreter in the communicative process. Since the interpreting process situates an interpreter in between the two participating sides, it assigns to him/her the role of a mediator that has to bridge interlingual as well as intercultural gaps. This paper addresses the challenges an interpreter has to face when processing the information, grasping the right meaning of utterances, and providing listeners with an accurate interpretation in a pleasant delivery style. Likewise this study enlists and investigates other aspects of the interpreter’s role: harmonizing the expectations of speakers and listeners and tackling communicative problems and misunderstandings. Besides this survey pays attention to the importance of the sociological characteristic of language on the interpretation and the impact of varied components of speech on the effectiveness of the communication. Finally it reflects on the nowadays-challenging situation in the area of interpreting services that overstrains the interpreter’s role when interpreting fast, dense, highly specialised or hard to comprehend speeches.

Šis pētījums apskata tulka daudzpusīgās lomas problemātiskos aspektus un tiecas noskaidrot, vai ir iespējams noteikt striktāku tulka lomas definējumu. Tas analizē dažādas situācijas, kas nosaka vairāk vai mazāk aktīvu tulka lomu komunikācijas procesā. Tulkošanas procesā tulks, atrazdamies starp abām iesaistītajām pusēm, ieņem vidutāja lomu, kas viņam/i izvirza uzdevumu pārvarēt valodu un kultūru atšķirības. Šis diplomdarbs iztirzā problemātiskās situācijas, kādas tulks pieredz, kad apstrādā informāciju, cenšas uztvert runas nianses, kā arī nodrošināt precīzu tulkojumu patīkamā runas manierē. Tāpat arī šis pētījums uzskaita un sīkāk izpēta arī citus tulka lomas aspektus, kad viņš/a cenšas saskaņot runātāju un klausītāju prasības, kā arī risina pārpratumus un citas komunikācijas problēmas. Bez tam šis darbs pievērš uzmanību tam, cik svarīgs tulkošanas procesā ir valodas socioloģiskais raksturs un kāda ir dažādo runas elementu ietekme uz komunikācijas efektivitāti. Nobeigumā tas apspriež mūsdienu sarežģīto situāciju tulkojumu pakalpojumu jomā, kas pārslogo tulka lomu, kad jātulko pārāk ātras, saturiski pieblīvētas, ļoti specializētas vai grūti saprotamas runas.
