The aim of this study was to analyze the morphology of congenital bowel adhesions.
Adhesions were collected from 22 patients undergoing laparotomy. All adhesions were routinely stained and expression of PGP 9.5, IL-1α and IL-6 were examined using immunohistochemical investigations. Intensity of staining was scored by semiquantitative scale.
In most of the cases congenital bowel adhesions were highly vascularized connective tissue. Nerve fibres mostly were located in the walls of the blood vessels or around them. Some of the cells that reflect the presence of inflammatory sites were dispersed in the connective tissue.
