KVM virtualizācijas sistēmas iespējas

Abstract

Virtualizācijas sistēma KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) ir parādījusies nesen, 2007. gadā, salīdzinājumā ar citām virtualizācijas sistēmām kā Xen un VMware. KVM ir atvērtā pirmkoda virtualizācijas sistēma, kas pēc noklusējuma integrēta Linux kodolā sākot ar versiju 2.6.20. Lasot daudzus rakstus par šo virtualizācijas sistēmu, viennozīmīgi var secināt, ka nepastāv vienots viedoklis par šo sistēmu. Citi uzskata, ka KVM ir liels konkurents populārajām virtualizācijas sistēmām Xen un VMware, savukārt citi atkal uzskata pretējo. Vēl interesantāk, ka viens no lielākajiem Linux distibutīviem Red Hat paziņojis par pāriešanu no Xen uz KVM virtualizāciju, kas jau esot nesen noticis ar distributīva Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 iznākšanu 10. novembrī 2010. gadā. Mans mērķis ir izpētīt šo jauno virtualizācijas sistēmu un novērtēt tās veiktspēju un stabilitāti, lai atbildētu uz jautājumu, vai KVM ir liels konkurents pasaules slaveniem zīmoliem Xen un VMware. Kā arī pozitīvas atbildes rezultātā, veikt serveru migrēšanu no pašreizējās virtualizācijas sistēmas Xen uz KVM. Atslēgvārdi: virtualizācija, KVM, Xen, hipervizors.

The virtualization system KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) appeared only in 2007 compared with other virtualization systems like Xen and VMware. KVM is the open source code virtualization system, which has been integrated into Linux kernel by default beginning with the version 2.6.20. After reading many articles about this virtualization system, it can be concluded unanimously that there is no uniformview about this system. Some people suppose that KVM is a big competitor for such popular virtualization systems as Xen and VMware, but the others think exactly the opposite. It is more interesting to note that one of the biggest Linux distributives Red Hat has announced turning to KVM from Xen virtualization, which took place with the appearance of the distributive Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 on 10 November, 2010. My aim is to research this new virtualization system and evaluate its productivity and stability in order to answer the question if KVM is a big competitor for such world-famous brands as Xen and VMware. In case of a positive answer, my task will be to perform server migration from the current virtualization system Xen to KVM. Key words: virtualization, KVM, Xen, hypervisor.
