Culture has a significant role in its implication to translation of any text type and genre. Cultural differences may cause more serious complications in translation than do differences in language structure.
This paper will examine particular features of translating questionnaires, basing on the analysis of what cultural aspects influence in translation and the level of interpretation, and how they do it in terms of equivalence, role of gender, rendering phraseologisms and realia.
Questionnaire is a particular genre, and this paper will provide guidelines and discuss certain pitfalls in translation because of cultural specifics. The author concentrates on comparison of Latvian and English translations. For this purpose there will be three questionnaires analysed and compared, providing concrete examples. Hence, the main issues in English and Latvian translations of questionnaires will be formulated.
This topic is very important and relevant in terms of development and advancement of translation strategies.
