The main focus of this diploma paper is the rendering of culture-bound concepts in the translation of the novel “Eat, pray, love” by Elizabeth Gilbert. Being a worldwide popular novel and representing four different cultures, it makes a good research material for the above mentioned research and analysis. The main goal of this diploma paper is to examine translations of culture-related concepts and to assess whether the translation options chosen by the translator Ina Strautniece are appropriate to help the reader to understand elements of a different culture. The research method employed in this diploma paper is the contrastive analysis. The main conclusion drawn by the author of this diploma paper is: the deeply embedded in a particular culture a text is, the more considerations regarding its rendering into another language are required from the translator.
Key words: literary translation, cultural transfer, contrastive analysis, allusions.
