Maģistra darbs aplūko tulkošanas teorijas un metaforas to kognitīvajā aspektā.

The present Master thesis is devoted to the investigation of theory on translation and approaches to metaphor from the cognitive perspective. In the theory of translation, the aspect of translating metaphors has been rather neglected. Nevertheless, metaphors are prevailing in economic texts and translators often have to face problems when dealing with them. There are different views on the level of metaphor translatability depending on the text type, the type of metaphor or cultural overlap.
The goal of the paper was to analyse the use and translation of metaphors in economic texts, namely, in “Forbes” magazine, as well as to check whether novel metaphors in magazine articles pose serious problems to their translators and are most often rendered by a paraphrase. For this paper, the following methods of research were applied: theoretical – literature review, and empirical – analysis of the metaphors in the articles of magazine “Forbes” and their translations. The results of the theoretical part showed that there is still no unanimous opinion on translation as a discipline and the concept of metaphor. The results of the empirical research completely proved the proposed hypothesis because the translation of novel metaphors from English into Latvian was based on paraphrase in 63% of the cases thus losing their metaphorical meaning as the translators tried to avoid translating metaphors by substitution or literal translation method.
Key words: translation, metaphor, economic texts, translation strategy, cognitive approach.
