Šausmu un groteskas elementi A. Bīrsa novelēs

Abstract

Pētījums analizē šausmu un satīras izpausmes un mijiedarbību Ambroza Bīrsa novelēs. Bīrsa noveles tiek aplūkoti amerikāņu reālisma un romatisma kontekstā, jo Bīrss darbojās pārejas posmā starp šīm divām kustībām. Tādēļ romantisma elementi Ambroza Bīrsa novelēs tiek salīdzināti ar E.A. Po un Vašingtona Irvinga darbiem, turpretī cilvēka psiholoģijas tēlojuma paņēmieni un šausmu efekti, ko Bīrss apvienojis ar asu sociālo satīru, tiek parādīta kā raksturīga iezīme amerikāņu literatūrā pēc pilsoņu kara. Tādējādi iespējams secināt, ka Bīrss savās novelēs apvienojis romantisma un reālisma metodes, konkrētāk, folkloras un gotikas elementus ar sociāli politisko kritiku, radīdams savdabīgu un iedarbīgu šausmu un satīras savienojumu.

The research analyzes Ambrose Bierce’s short stories, in particular, the manifestations and interplay of horror and satire in them. The paper aims at studying his tales in the context of American Romanticism and Realism, because Bierce worked in the period of transition between the two movements. Consequently, the Romanticist elements in Ambroce Bierce’s stories are discussed in the light of the writings of E.A. Poe and Washington Irwing, while the technique of disclosing human psychology and the effect of horror on it, which Bierce unites with pointed social satire, is presented as characteristic to American literature after the Civil War. The conclusion is that, in his tales, Bierce combines the methods of Romanticism and Realism, namely, folkloric and Gothic elements with socio-political criticism to achieve an original and taunting collation of horror and satire.-
