Viktoriāņu sievietes postmodernās romancēs: A.S. Baietas „Apsēstība” un Dž. Faulza „Franču leitnanta sieviete”

Abstract

Šī darba uzmanības centrā ir A.S. Baietas novele “Apsēstība” un Dž. Faulza novele “Franču leitnanta sieviete” kā postmodernās romances. Darba gaitā atklātas galvenās iezīmes, kuras raksturīgas postmodernām romancēm, kas sagatavo pamatu apspriežamo grāmatu analīzei. Dotajā darbā aplūkota arī sieviešu loma Viktoriāņu periodā un sniegts šī perioda attēlojums augstāk minētajās novelēs. Vēsturiskais pamats ir ļoti svarīgs šai darba daļai, jo tas dod autorei iespēju salīdzināt faktus ar aprakstīšanu, kuru piedāvā A.S. Baieta un Dž. Faulzs. Pētījums ļauj secināt, ka abām novelēm, “Apsēstība” un “Franču leitnanta sieviete”, ir postmodernām romancēm raksturīgās iezīmes, kuras izanalizētas darba teorētiskājā daļā, tādējādi šie darbi ir parādīti kā postmodernās romances. Turklāt, abi autori attēlo Viktoriāņu laika sievietes kā stipras un spilgtas individualitātes, kas arī ļauj secināt, ka abas noveles, uz kuru analīzi šis darbs ir fokusēts, prasa vēlreiz pārskatīt Viktoriāņu perioda izpratni.

This paper considers novels Possession written by A.S. Byatt and The French Lieutenant’s Woman written by J. Fowles as postmodern romances. In the course of work the primary characteristic features of postmodern romances are discovered which provides a foundation for the analysis of the books under discussion. The paper also examines the role of a woman in the Victorian age and the representation of the Victorian period in the abovementioned novels. The historical background is very important for this part of the study, since it provides the author with the opportunity to compare the facts with the description offered by A.S. Byatt and J. Fowles. The paper concludes that since both Possession and The French Lieutenant’s Woman possess the characteristic features of postmodern romances, discussed in the theoretical part of this study, these works are shown to be postmodern romances. Moreover, both authors represent the Victorian women as strong personalities and bright individuals, thus both novels this study is focused on ask for the reconsideration of the interpretation of the Victorian age.
