Television’s news programme “Eiropa šodien” (Europe Today), its editors, preferences of
youth audience and final content of the news medium. The purpose of the study is to
ascertain how the relationships between journalists, audience and medium are created and
to determine how news is judged and presented.
Basis of this paper is agenda-setting theory, originally presented by Maxwell
McCombs. Thus the research is divided in several parts:
1) Content analysis of 1280 news stories, broadcasted on the news programme
“Eiropa šodien” from September 2005 to February 2006. Content analysis helps to
identify main topics and issues and determine issues on medium agenda;
2) Survey of „gate keepers” in news organization to determine how and why they
select particular news stories;
3) Analysis of public opinion research done by “Latvian Facts” and also survey of
100 young adults about their interests, needs and preferences to determine issues on
viewers’ agenda;
4) Calculation of correlation coefficient and drawing the conclusions.
