The present Master Thesis investigates anglicisms in modern Spanish and Latvian women’s magazines. This research aims at finding out how the English language can influence Spanish and Latvian through the language of women’s magazines. The study is useful both for linguists and translators/interpreters.
The theoretical part establishes the background for the research by reviewing relevant theoretical sources. The paper includes both a description and classification of anglicisms, the causes and effects of their emersion in a language, the reasons to use them in a language, etc.
Empirical research in the form of a comparative analysis is undertaken with the purpose to find out what kind of anglicisms are used both in Spanish and Latvian modern women’s magazines. The findings of the study have proved that the influence of the English language is evident both in Spanish and Latvian, and the abuse of anglicisms may have negative effects on the development of a language.
