Abstract

Kvalifikācjas darba nosaukums: “Rendering Latvian Geographical Names in English Language Publications” Autore:Sarmīte Lietuviete, Moderno Valodu fakultātes Sastatāmās valodniecības un tulkošanas nodaļas studente. Darba mērķis:Izstrādāt ieteikumus latviešu ģeogrāfisko nosaukumu atveidei angļu valodā un izveidot Vidzemes reģiona ģeogrāfisko nosaukumu vārdnīcu brošūras „Vidzemes ainavu daudzveidība šodien un rīt” leksikas ietvaros. Latvijā pašlaik risinās diskusija par citvalodu īpašvārdu atveidi latviešu valodā, taču uzmanība netiek pievērsta latviešu ģeogrāfisko nosaukumu atveidei angļu valodas tekstos. Paredzams, ka šāda veida publikāciju skaits nākotnē pieaugs. Latvijai iesaistoties starptautiskās norisēs, paplašinās arī latviešu valodas kā valsts valodas un ES oficiālās valodas funkcijas. Tādēļ latviešu īpašvārdu, tai skaitā ģeogrāfisko nosaukumu atveides problēmas svešvalodās ir jāatrisina, un ja iespējams, lietošana oficiāli jāstandartizē. Praksē vērojama liela pareizrakstības, terminu atveides un gramatikas aspektu traktēšanas daudzveidība un konsekvences trūkums. Darba uzdevums ir studēt teoriju un praksi Latvijā, kā arī starptautisko praksi un ārvalstīs izstrādātās vadlīnijas. Darbam ir sešas nodaļas; tas satur trīs terminoloģijas tabulas un pielikumu – Vidzemes ģeogrāfisko nosaukumu vārdnīcu. Vispirms ģeogrāfiskie nosaukumi tiek skatīti kā leksiskas vienības informatīvā tekstā un īpašā saziņā, kura prasa funkcionālu ieeju šo nosaukumu atveidei. Tālāk analizēts ģeogrāfisko nosaukumu atveides kompleksais raksturs. Gan īpašvārda daļas, gan ģeogrāfiskā termina daļas atveidei var pastāvēt dažādas pieejas atkarībā no saziņas situācijas. Bez tam, lai precīzi atveidotu nosaukumu, jāpārzina ne tikai mērķa valodas gramatika, bet arī specifiskā tēma. Darbā analizēta arī citu Eiropas valstu pieredze likumdošanā un vietvārdu standartizācijā. Tiek apskatītas dažas mūsdienu publikācijas angļu valodā, kurās atveidoti latviešu vietvārdi. Vietējās publikācijas ietver upju baseinu pārvaldības plānus, telpiskos plānojumus un programmas, rakstus par kultūrvēsturiskām tēmām. Ārvalstu avoti kalpo gan par negatīviem, gan pozitīviem piemēriem, lai ilustrētu pieeju vietvārdu atveidei. Darbā sniegti vispārēja rakstura secinājumi un ieteikumi tālākiem pētījumiem, kā arī paraugu vārdnīca A.Junkura brošūrā “Vidzemes ainavu daudzveidība šodien un rīt” minēto Vidzemes vietvārdu atveidei. The aim:Develop recommendations for rendering Latvian place names into English and a geographical name glossary within the limits of the publication “Vidzemes ainavu daudzveidība šodien un rīt” by A.Junkurs In Latvia, there is a wide ongoing discussion about writing foreign proper names, including geographical names. However, little attention has been paid to the use of Latvian geographical names in foreign language literature. It is expected, that the number of such publications will increase in future. The role and functions of the Latvian language as the state language and one of the official languages of the European Union are broadening and Latvia becomes increasingly engaged in international partnerships and processes, both on European and world scale. Therefore, the issue of rendering Latvian proper names, including geographical names, in foreign languages has to be resolved and, if possible, officially standardized. The actual practice reveals a variety of practices in spelling of geographical names, rendering the terms, approaching the grammatical aspects of complex place names. The purpose of the paper is to study theory, local practice of rendering Latvian geographical names in English as well as international practice and guidelines developed abroad. The paper consists of six chapters, three terminology tables and an appendix – the glossary of Vidzeme geographical names. First, geographical names are discussed as lexical units in informative texts - in special communication requiring functional approach to rendering of geographical names. Next, the complex nature of rendering geographical names is analysed. Both rendering the proper name element and translation of geographical term may have different strategies depending on the communicative situation. Besides, not only good command of target language grammar but also of background knowledge is important for an accurate rendering. Legislative experience and standardisation in other European countries is analysed prior to scrutinising current publications and practices of rendering geographical names into English. The local publications analysed are reports of river basin management projects, spatial plans and programmes, heritage studies. The foreign sources include both negative and positive examples of approaching place name translation. The paper contains general conclusions, recommendations for further studies as well as a model glossary for translating into English of the place names in the brochure “Vidzemes ainavu daudzveidība šodien un rīt” (Vidzeme Landscape Diversity Today and Tomorrow) by Andris Junkurs.
