Apocalyptic plots have been a part of the Western cultures for centuries. Apart from the highly demanded Hollywood disaster films, apocalyptic plots have also entered American as well as European arthouse cinema. The goal of this research was to analyse and compare apocalyptic plots in Melancholia by Lars von Trier and Take Shelter by Jeff Nichols. It was concluded that both films deal with the struggles of the postmodern condition and the uncertainty of such notions as truth and normality in the postmodern world. Melancholia contains bold statements about the evil nature of the human race and presents the viewers with sublime visions of the apocalypse. In contrast, Take Shelter is focused on the protagonist’s struggle which is related to economic and social issues in America.
