In the case of Germany, national identity building and the problems of immigration are with deeply rooted within complicated history. The hypothesis of this thesis is as follows: immigration in modern the Federal Republic of Germany is an important component of constructing the national identity. Further the author presents various theoretical conceptions of identity, and then specifies the term of national identity and the ways immigration can influence the national identity building process. Further chapters are about the national identity of Germany, first in the German Empire and then after the unification in 1989.
