The aim of the Paper is to examine how different outdoor activities facilitate learning English vocabulary in Grade 9 students. The author of the work wanted to search for innovative methods and to present them in the Diploma Paper.
Teachers in Northern Europe are very keen on involving outdoor activities in learning process. Although in Latvia it has not become very popular yet, everything has started moving forwards, e.g. Latvijas Valsts Meži has published a book with ready-made activities to teach English outdoors. Despite of the progress in technologies coming into schools, soon teachers will focus on outdoor activities. It is not at all expensive, rather healthy and useful in the century when it seems every child spends too much time on electronic gadgets. Also working at school with teenagers for four years, the author of the Research has noticed this problem at school. That is why she has chosen teenagers, exactly Grade 9 students as a research group to conduct the case study.
In the Paper the author, firstly, examined methods how to teach vocabulary in EFL, secondly, concentrated on Outdoor Education and then focused on the case study.
The research method was case study, conducted in Jelgava Spīdola Gymnasium. To get the results, the author carried out two questionnaires, before and after learning outdoors, analysis of students’ works, analysis of feedback information, created and piloted 5 main outdoor activities and summarized the results.
At the end of the research, the author found students very content, even inspired. They were fascinated about learning vocabulary in a different way and what they liked the most was that they liked to participated all the time in a lesson, there was not a moment when they could just sit and stop thinking or play in mobile phones. After the activities which were involved in Outdoor Education, students admitted they have learned new vocabulary better because they felt at ease.
The teacher has created good materials to carry out also in other classes.
