One of the best known mechanisms used in collective decision making by ants are trail pheromones. However, many social insects have a well developed route memory, which can function as the main guidance. In this experiment route memory and pheromone effects are being disentangled. In the first phase of the experiment Lasius niger colony was presented with 0.5 M sucrose solution and allowed to form route memories and pheromone trails to this food source. After the removal of route memories or pheromone trails, in the second phase of the experiment the colony was allowed to choose between the 0.5 M solution and a 1 M sucrose solution. The results clearly show that route memory alone was enough to trigger the inability to switch, because in the second phase of the experiment a significantly higher proportion of ants were on the 0.5 M feeder.
