The cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) are a typical waterflow that live in colonies. As habitat they most often prefer islands that are located in lakes. Their colonies exert continuous pressure on local ecosystems, increasing the risk of destabilized development and normal functioning of the ecosystem. The number of cormorants has increased around the world as well as in Latvia. As a result of their action more territories are affected and experiencing greater consequences. Vegetation become depressed and even destroyed, the soil became saturated with the addition of chemical compounds, that alter not only the ongoing processes, but also migration of elements and compounds in the groundwater as well as adjacent ecosystems.
This study summarizes the characteristics of the cormorant species, their spread in Latvia and the world and their impact on the environment.
Bachelor study thesis tries to estimate the changes to the Siena island’s environment in the Ežezers lake, thought to be caused by cormorants. The field study was carried out in the August of 2014. The different species of vegetation was inventoried, their coverage recorded. Soil sampling was realized to determine morphological, physical (soil texture groups, bulk density) and chemical properties (pH value, total organic carbon and total nitrogen content, exchangeable cations concentrations, cation exchange capacity, total organic carbon stock (t/ha)) in the vicinity of cormorant’s nests and elsewhere, in undisturbed area.
The collected data was analyzed and compared with research done several years ago, thereby not only assessing the current state of the ecosystem, but also evaluating the changes driven by the increased population of cormorants.
