The aim of this research is to reveal how different aspects of the meaning of underground music have changed in the transition from a Soviet to a post-Soviet society in Latvia and Lithuania from 1985 to 1995. The way in which subcultural identity is performed through cultural objects and practices is investigated via the method of oral history. The insider perspective, gained from the conducted interviews, allows a comparison in meaning, attached to underground music, both in time – from the Soviet to post-Soviet period – and in space – between Lithuania and Latvia. In this master’s thesis it is argued that, whereas an underground identity in the Soviet period was performed through concerts, in the post-Soviet period the same identity was performed in Latvia and Lithuania through the establishment of institutional spaces and places.
